Of Monsters and Men is a band out of Iceland that is the audio equivalent of a warm weighted blanket. Mission Ballroom in Denver was packed to the rafters with those looking to be hugged by the acclaimed folk-rock band.

Opening for OMAM’s tour is Árný Margrét, a singer songwriter also from Iceland. With her guitar and light, airy vocals, she entranced eager the audience with her set. She even performed one song in Icelandic which was very cool to hear as a number of Icelandic bands I have seen perform in Denver usually shy away from doing so.

Of Monsters and Men started their set with two tracks off of the new album “All is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade”. “Television Love” beginning with delicate notes, then drummer Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson came in with big, clean drums, soon welcoming in Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson as one half of OMAM’s stellar vocal duo. Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir joined in on the third verse with a soft touch that was joined by the rest of the band as the song swelled into it’s conclusion. It felt like a perfect opening song.

The night was a journey through every album, hitting the major radio songs like “Dirty Paws”, “Little Talks” and “Alligator”. Along with those songs, and many others in the set, created huge moments in songs like “Crystals”, and quiet, tender moments in the show finale “Fruit Bat”. Of Monsters and Men have built a catalog of songs that can take you on a journey, no matter the set list. This is a show that should not be missed, even if you’re a casual fan, because the experience is a special one.
