Myles Kennedy

Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, MN
It was a ridiculously cold night in Minneapolis, and has been each night since, hitting -5 degrees Saturday. The winds on my walk over to the Varsity Theater left me wondering how I ever did it many time 7-8 years ago.
In the bucket of bands and music that has been a mainstay for a huge period of my life, Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti and the bands that surround them have been firmly attached. Creed’s Weathered was one of my first albums I ever bought when it came out. I’ve been a huge fan of Alter Bridge for the better part of two decades. Toss in Tremonti’s solo work, Myles’s pairing with Slash, there’s been a lot of exposure to this world of music for me. Now add in Myles Kennedy’s own solo stuff.
One of my favorite things about going to shows is finding out how the night and it’s vibes are going to feel. There’s been shows with super high production levels, and ones that are very stripped down. Both sides have their own merits, and last Saturday night’s solo show my Myles Kennedy was a more stripped down kind of show, which I loved.
This night felt special to me. Not only did I get to watch one of my favorite singers play, the stripped down-ness, and improv at times, made me feel like I and everyone in the room was watching something only meant for us. Six songs out of ten on the newest album The Art of Letting Go were played, including “Behind the Veil,” which has what I felt was a ten minute long jazz improv inspired guitar solo. It was impressive to watch and also a joy to get sucked in along with just feeling the mood out.
Part of what made it a joy to watch Myles from my side of the lens and stage was how clearly Myles was having fun. I feel like he was feeding off the energy of the smaller, more intimate crowd that Varsity Theater can bring compared to what I’m used to seeing him in.
I may have had an unbearably cold walk to the venue, but the show left me with the good warm fuzzies which definitely helped for the walk back. A very good way to start my 2025 concert year.
