On this day before Thanksgiving, and this day that I’m writing up my thoughts about the last Silverstein show that I got to experience last Saturday, I just want to start with acknowledging being thankful for so much in my life these days.

Music has been a huge part of the majority of my life and I like thinking about it as one of the great equalizers in life in general. Everyone likes music, there’s just different flavors of it for each person. Teenage to college-aged me was so adamant about music being my career. There was maybe like one other path I could see myself going down back then. I find myself looking back often these days at things I’ve been able to do now, that past-me would have been crazy about. The niche in the music scene I’ve fit myself in might not be exactly what I’d hoped 15 years ago, but the itch that photography scratches is still oh so satisfying.

Last Saturday I got to attend Silverstein’s show at The Fillmore. I echo Shane Told’s sentiments that I have no idea why it was so long since they’ve been in town and that they ought to come back sooner. Last time I caught them was 2019 at the Varsity Theater and then Skyway and I remember walking away super impressed and wondering why I hadn’t listened to them more.

Six years later and I definitely remedied that wonder, as I’ve been listening to the new double EPs Antibloom and Pink Moon a ton this year. They’re top five albums of the year for me. That has caused me to go through the back catalogue some more and get more and more excited for this last show.

I’ll get it out of the way here first: I am a little bummed that this tour and set didn’t have more new stuff to it. I like the new EPs enough where I would be super happy to see those played in full as the point of the show. But this tour is in celebration of 25 years of being a band, so I get wanting to do a career spanning set. Being up front and shooting during the band playing songs like “Negative Space,” “Drain the Blood,” and “Stress” was a treat, and “Bad Habits” and “The Afterglow” were nice surprises.

The whole night, while feeling like a celebration, felt like a slow burn build up, coalescing into the staple songs that emo fans in the mid-00s loved: “Smile in you’re Sleep,” “My Heroine,” and “Smashed Into Pieces”. Going from one electric crowd a couple nights before with Trivium, it was really cool to see that energy kept up. Shane Told even joked during “My Heroine” pitting the fans against Milwaukee after saying they were so far the best date on the tour. After the last and loudest chorus, Shane quipped “You guys were the loudest and best all along, I just wanted to get you guys to sing even louder.”

The biggest circle pit I’ve seen in a long time for “Bleeds No More” ended the night, and as I walked back to my care, I couldn’t help but think how cool it is that after twenty years of listening to some of these songs, I get to experience moments like these and play whatever small role in covering them. So thanks to everyone involved that help make it happen!
