Single Review: Frankie and the Witch Fingers: “Economy” (2025)

Frankie and the Witch Fingers Release Promising New Single “Economy” in Anticipation of New Album Trash Classic.

Los Angeles’ Frankie and the Witch Fingers, a psych-punk rock band formed in 2013, has released a glimpse into their next album, Trash Classic, which will stream on June 6th with their single “Economy.”  “Economy” provides a sneak-peak into the bands transformation to a more bouncy electronic sound all the while staying true to the themes they hold close to them. Their 2023 album, Data Doom, maintained a fast-paced electrifying feel, as if the lyrics were tightly bound between the mask of the murky whirring instrumentals. Its themes delved heavily into the effects that a tech-driven world has on its consumers, maintaining us a helpless slave to our devices. You there, ensnared by the God of wired screens they sing in “Mild Davis.”

Economy” provides a more targeted criticism on consumer culture in today’s age, highlighting the constant cycle of purchasing and the encroachment of human’s and the earth’s demise due to this misuse of product. The song itself is a loop opening and ending with the repetition of “diabolical, economical” in a computer-like voice, with cracks and errors stopping the flow of this repetition. The subtle detail of the errored-out noise of the computer not being able to say “diabolical economical” over- and-over again highlights this misuse of products to the point of malfunction. The contents of the song reminded me of Pink Floyd’s “Money” along with anthropologist David Graeber, who opened discussions on the uselessness of corporate job functionality and their existence used to serve a consumer-driven hierarchy. Consuming is good, it’s what we’re made for, and if you work hard, you get to consume more (Cha-Ching!).

Trash Classic was regarded by Bandcamp to be “a raw, twisted monument to rot and excess—toxic glamour and nihilistic salvation” marking “Economy” the rise of its “filth.” With a track list featuring song titles named “Eggs Laid Brain,” “T.V. Baby,” “Conducting Experiments,” and many more, Frankie and the Witch Fingers have a lot to unpack onto us, and personally I’m looking forward to embracing the rot.

See Frankie and the Witch Fingers on tour starting May 16th and Pre-Order Trash Classic now! Tour dates can be seen here.
