As an older twenty-something in Los Angeles, there are a few things I just don’t really do anymore.  They vary among staying out past 10 PM on a week night and attending club shows if I can at all help it.  I gotta work the next day ya know?  But when I heard that Ryan Beatty was playing two nights at The Moroccan Lounge, internally I was like, “yeah I’ll be there.”

I figured it would be a mellow show, probably not too crowded, where I could just grab a drink and hang back.  Boy, was I wrong.  When I got inside the Moroccan Lounge it was packed to the brim.  I learned that Beatty had actually sold out both nights of his shows and it seemed like everyone in LA was at either night 1 or 2.  Among the crowd were Brockhampton’s Matt Champion and producer Jabari Manwa to name a couple.

Beatty took the stage with his band of musicians.  Behind him, a giant banner that read “Aphex Twink” (hilarious) and in front of him just a mic stand.  They started the night off with “Haircut” and they worked their way through his record with one variance, he played “Powerslide” twice.  The crowd went wild for that. Though Beatty was adorably nervous when he addressed the crowd, he was incredibly natural performing.  The kid was in his element.  His voice sounded just as beautiful if not more so live than recorded.

If you missed Ryan Beatty this time around, no worries!  He’s coming to town again in March, tour dates are here. In the mean time, do yourself a favor and get acquainted with, Boy in Jeans, Beatty’s full-length, an absolute gem I promise.  Also, you can hear him in the hook on “Bleach” off of Brockhampton’s Saturation III and on “Queer” off of Saturation II.  Happy listening!
