When you’re fortunate enough to see Puscifer at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, you just knew “it’s gonna be alright”. Touring in support of their most recent release “Normal Isn’t”. Their set list drew heavily from the new music, in fact they played every song off the band’s new offering.

Dave Hall ( DAVE! DAVE! DAVE!) opened the show, he is a comedian and talk show host hailing from Cleveland, OH. He was a high energy guy, performing music after several different bursts of Nunchaku, bike jumping and microphone cord whipping. When we heard there would be a comedy act opening the show, it was met with a bit of a “huh…” but shortly after made a lot of sense after only a little more thought went into it. Dave was a great opener for the show, bringing tons of energy and getting the crowd into it with chants of “Dave!” over and over. About half way through his set, he brought out a band and played some music.

Puscifer began their set with “Thrust”, the opening track off of “Normal Isn’t”. Carina and Maynard hidden in the dark along the elevated catwalk along the back of the stage. They then came down the stairs in the middle for the second song “Self Evident”. If you have seen the video for the song, the movements of the band members was the same, all show long. a very staccato, robotic movement throughout the evening.

One of the many highlights of the night happened near then end of “The Remedy” where Carina and Maynard became engaged in a progressively more severe NERF gun fight, each grabbing a larger weapon with greater capability from their respective side of the stage. After 11 songs and one video, the band took a 10 minute intermission.

After the intermission, “The Humbling River” was played, but this time they went synth heavy and reinvented the song . It was honestly one of my favorite songs I have ever heard from them and I really hope they release the live version, it was exceptional.

The show was mostly a phone free event, that relied more on honesty (and the threat of being removed if you were seen with your phone recording). For the last two songs of the night though, MJK said we had earned the chance to take our phones out for the last two songs of the night. As a photographer, I really enjoy recording and capturing moments, but it was actually really nice to just be focused on the event, the setting, and disconnect from what was outside of the venue and be present at the show.

Dave Hill returned to the stage to perform a few tricks on his bike during Conditions, and then for part of “A Public Stoning”. I unfortunately missed that part as I had to leave a bit early to retrieve my camera gear from security before everyone else started leaving at the show’s conclusion.

Puscifer yet again put on an incredible show. Not just tremendous live music, but theatrics, visuals and creativity they bring to every tour.
