The Fillmore in Minneapolis, MN

I’ve said it before, but there’s not many bands or artists that I would travel to go see. Call it getting older, or just being more selective with where and how I would like to spend my time.

Periphery is one of those bands for me. I did it a couple years ago when I flew down to Atlanta, and once again this weekend, this time going down to Chicago, my favorite city besides Minneapolis.

I’ve been listening to Periphery for over a decade now and just hitting the ten year mark of seeing them live. I’ve been grateful for how I’ve been able to follow the band’s trajectory over those years, which has been an ever so steady and constant build. It’s been so cool to see the band go from a small venue like Varsity Theater, then to bigger Skyway Theater, then to the biggest I’ve seen them in, The Fillmore. It’s also been interesting to see the band play in different cities, because you can then get a bit of a sense of how the band pulls in different markets. A band like the Matches sold out House of Blue in Chicago and you could definitely feel it, but here in Minneapolis, it was at a smaller venue and less packed like sardines. It being Halloween certainly took away some of a crowd, but I was still impressed at the turn out. All the bands dressed up, which added an extra specialness to the night.

I haven’t seen Periphery here in Minneapolis since 2019, so I’ve been very much itching to see them again, and those feelings were increased due to their newest album A Pale White Dot being what they’re touring behind.

The other big feeling of getting me to see this tour not just the one time here in Minneapolis, but also the day before in Chicago, was one of the openers they had, Greyhaven. I first got to see Greyhaven a couple years ago when they opened for Protest the Hero. I knew of them and like them well enough back then, but since that show, they’ve easily become my favorite new metal band, and probably just band, in general. They’re just so fresh, so heavy yet so melodic and catch. So many interesting parts and riffs to their songs that all flow so well to each other. And they have a killer vocalist, Brent Mills, who I would argue has the best vocals and screams in the scene.

I’ve been dying to catch a Greyhaven set for a long time now, and I figured that if I’m not going to be able to get a headliner set, that I’m going to want to see them as many times on this tour as I reasonably could, so traveling to Chicago was on the boards.

Periphery though, even though it’s been 7 years (which itself is crazy to think about) they absolutely live up to the hype. One of my favorite show memories ever was from that last show, where they opened with their 16 minute long epic song “Reptile”. You just don’t often come across a band that pulls a bold move like that. I never thought I would get to see it live again, but damn, the band is closing with it on this tour and it hits just as good as an ender. All around this was one of my favorite setlists. There was a perfect amount of stuff off their newest album, which sounded fantastic, especially “Mr. God,” “Subhuman,” and “Heaven on High” has been one of my biggest earworms since the shows. If I could change anything, I would have loved for their to be at least one more song from Periphery 3 or Periphery 4. Those are my favorite albums, and I feel like that would have rounded out their set perfectly. “Lune” was a treat to be able to see again though. My strongest memory from my first Periphery show is of that song, where all of the crowd sang the woah’s near the end. It gave me chills back then, and they came back again ten years later.
