Turf Club in St. Paul, MN
The Turf Club always has a slight special feeling to me.
When I decided to start concert photography back in 2016, one of the first shows I decided to try and shoot was Nothing But Thieves at the Turf Club. I ultimately didn’t get approved, but I did still end up going, because starting concert photography gave me the courage to be more of a yes man when it comes to concerts. It ended up being a really good show that I was happy I had gone to, and most recently, helped me decide it was time to pull one of those moves again and attend The Dangerous Summer at the same Turf Club.
The best shows I go to are the ones I get surprised by. I used to go to shows and catch every single band that would be playing. I’ve gotten a little bit relaxed on that these days, but this was one show where I felt pulled to catch all the bands, Bad Luck and Rosecoloredworld. They were both great! I can easily see them keeping up throughout the years and becoming much bigger.
Rosecoloredworld reminded me of very old New Years Day, and after listening to them more since the show, there’s a bit of Against the Current in them. Female co-fronted pop punk that’s incredibly catchy and fun and played one of the most impressive covers of Radiohead’s Creep I’ve seen. Bad Luck. is also a pop punk band that leans more on the midwest emo side, but not too much, which I’m a fan of. They’re songs were full of energy and emotion. I would have been very happy to continue watching them after their set ended. Boy did it end. Impressive Depressive closed there set and what I’ll remember most from the set as time goes on is singer Dominick slamming his fist down on his guitar pedalboard.
The Dangerous Summer proved to be very good as well. I’ll admit that going into this show I hadn’t listened to their music all that much, but like I say often, sometimes going into a show blind can enhance the experience. The Dangerous Summer play a slower pace of pop punk and the band played very well. I love a well mixed live sound, and I remember being very impressed with how the band sounded. Usually for bands that I’m not the most familiar with I defer some of my opinion to the crowd around me for how good they are, and the crowd at the Turf Club were very much into The Dangerous Summer.
Sometimes you have to get in touch with your younger self to make good decisions, and I’m glad that I was able to attend this show, to finally catch The Dangerous Summer for the first time, as well as a couple other bands that I’ll be keeping my eyes on.
