PHOTOS + REVIEW: PVRIS @ THE NOVO (LOS ANGELES, CA)

PVRIS (Lowell, MA)
September 22nd, 2017
The Novo in Los Angeles, CA

When PVRIS announced their tour in support of All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell, I knew we were in for a treat.  The trio stopped by The Novo in Los Angeles and put on a clinic of a show at the near capacity venue.

Draped in a truly dramatic setup -fog, dim lighting, and a trio of frames and screens that brought your attention to the center, Lynn Gunn was at a piano and the first notes to “Heaven” began.  The ground at The Novo started to shake as they went into the chorus.  The entire floor was off their feet as they sang along.  Both Alex Babinski and Brian MacDonald were all smiles as they hopped along with the crowd.

They went straight into “St. Patrick” and were great about interweaving their older catalog with their new songs.  I was surprised by how well the songs followed one another because even though AWKOHAWNOH is a natural progression from White Noise, I feel like it’s a completely different animal, it was even apparent in Gunn’s delivery.  I felt like I was watching a completely different person singing songs off of White Noise than the one singing songs off of AWKOHAWNOH.  Her performance was raw especially in moments while she was playing new material.  It was beautiful to see.  I loved seeing them play “Half,” “What’s Wrong” in between bopps “You and I” and “White Noise.”

Even though Gunn mentioned she was having butterflies, the performance was incredible.  The entire band and their on-tour drummer Brad Griffin kiiiiilled it.  Everything on this tour looked amazing and the production matched the album’s aesthetic and mood excellently.  PVRIS is the band of dreams friends.  If you are sleeping on PVRIS you have got to wake up.  Go out and get a copy of, All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell.  It is a completely solid gem of a record.  More importantly, go support this band live as $1 from every ticket sold is going to The Ally Coalition to raise awareness of LGBTQ Equality.  But also every dollar towards a PVRIS ticket is a dollar in support of you attending fire shows so you know, win-win.
