SOMA in San Diego, CA
Angels and Airwaves’ homecoming show marked an out of this world end for their Lifeforms Tour. A jam-packed SOMA greeted their local heroes with snatched energy from the beginning of the night to the end.
SOMA is one of those rare gems that shines pretty bright in San Diego’s history. Many many legendary bands took stage there and it holds an extra special value in Tom DeLonge’s own history. In 1993 a very young DeLonge took stage at SOMA and introduced himself and his brand new band “Blink” and as they say, well the rest is history.
The band delivered an unforgettable evening. They gifted fans raw energy, great music, and just the right amount of jokes and silliness in between songs that allowed fans to take part in the band’s amazing chemistry. DeLonge has this rare ability to be both, just the skater kid from down the block and this reluctant rockstar that leaves fans in the crowd wide-eyed in awe.
Fans gave as much as the band did. They were relentless from “Kiss & Tell” which opened the set to “Everything’s Magic,” a favorite of mine. “Tunnels” was another crowd pleaser and of course the cover of Blink 182’s “I Miss You” was met by loud cheers a full singalong that made the walls shake. “Rite of Spring” was dedicated to Mark Hoppus with whom he has started his musical journey. The evening ended with “Heaven” and a crowd that just wasn’t ready for the evening to end.
The last time they were in San Diego was a few years back in 2019 when they played the House of Blues downtown and I am hoping that I won’t have to wait that long to catch them live again.
